1987-1990 - Spain Brothers & Co Chartered Accountants (Maidstone)
Practice - large office of a regional accountancy firm located throughout Kent. Four partners, with separate training and taxation departments. Dealt with private limited companies, large partnerships and sole traders. Long standing firm with a good reputation in Kent and particular Maidstone.
Undertook my professional training with this large provisional firm, I worked in Maidstone and in other offices throughout Kent. A period of three years work experience is a requirement of becoming a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales, during which you train to take the professional exams of the Institute.
Typical assignment would include the preparation of the financial statements of a business, followed by the calculation of any tax liability and the audit when the business was a limited company. The level of financial records that I have dealt with stretched from a box of receipts to computer based.
Also worked in the taxation department - following up queries, dealing with the Inland Revenue and completing various tax forms.
1990 (3 months contract)- Halpern & Woolf Chartered Accountants (Oxford)
Practice - Regional office of a national firm based outside Oxford city centre. Four partner office, with separate tax department. General practice, providing services to large private companies and partnerships.
Assistant to manager, concentrated on audit and accounts preparation. Involved management of two junior staff. Deputised for tax manager in providing scripts to the local radio station for their financial bulletin. New skills - learning a new financial preparation computer package
1991 (4 months contract) - Hacker Young Chartered Accountants (Nottingham)
Practice - Small two partner regional office of a national firm in the centre of Nottingham. General practice, dealing with private limited companies, partnerships and sole traders, with a separate taxation department.
Senior position, working in all areas (audit, account and taxation). Assisted partner with a fraud investigation. New skills - taught work colleagues how to use Auditman software.
1992 (6 months contract) - Martin Bruno Certified Accountant (Chesterfield)
Practice - Local accountancy firm based on edge of Chesterfield town centre. Dealt with some small limited company, but primarily with partnerships and sole traders.
PA to accountant, dealing with all aspects of general practice work. Primary role was to computerise the completion and production of annual tax returns. New skills - learning to use a new taxation computer application.
